Plaintiffs: Hot Dogs Are Like Cigarettes

Three New Jersey residents plan to file a lawsuit today that could put the staple of the great American backyard cookout-the hot dog-on the same path as the once romanticized puff on a cigarette. Pointing to "landmark" research showing a heightened risk of colon cancer in people who consume processed meat, the class-action lawsuit in state Superior Court in Newark will target the makers of Nathan's, Oscar Mayer, Ball Park, Hebrew National and Sabrett franks as if they were Big Tobacco. The plaintiffs want labels on hot dogs to read, "WARNING: CONSUMING HOT DOGS AND OTHER PROCESSED MEATS INCREASES THE RISK OF CANCER." Read full Star Ledger report here.

Throw this case out!!

Any stupid jury who gives in to this should not be picked for jury duty.

I think I'll sue for breathing the air here. It's making me sick.

The people bringing this lawsuit are missing one small detail in their comparison of processed meat to tobacco - namely that processed meat does not contain an addictive substance such as nicotine.

In other words, once you start smoking, it can be very difficult to stop. No such case exists with hot dogs.

Smoking also affects those around you, so you are inflicting others with secondary smoke. You don't hurt by standers by eating hot dogs. Hot dogs are not addictive and consuming in moderation is no worse than drinking soda (in moderation) or eating all the other junk out there, too numerous to mention. We don't need food police.
