Apartment Complex Settles Federal Discrimination Suit For $200K

The U.S. Justice Department says owners and managers of a Lakewood apartment complex will pay $200,000 to settle allegations that they discriminated against Hispanic and African-American tenants. The lawsuit filed on behalf of tenants at the ------------ Apartments, claims the management transferred black and Hispanic tenants from the complex's most desirable building to make room for yidden, whom they courted as new tenants from 2002 to 2004 and charged lower rent. Under the settlement announced today, the defendants will pay $170,000 to the victims and $30,000 to the government as a civil penalty. The agreement must still be approved by a federal judge. NJ.

Don't Like The Way A Store Operates? A Molotov Cocktail May Not be The Answer

Two young people who said they were protesting the treatment of chickens when they threw Molotov cocktails at a KFC in Lakewood each have been sentenced to 90 days in the Ocean County Jail and five years of probation. Superior Court Judge Wendel E. Daniels on Friday also ordered Tyler C. Clark, 20, and Suzannah Kindig, 19, both of Lakewood, to pay $2,500 each in restitution to KFC for the damage they did to the restaurant at 140 E. Kennedy Blvd, not far from Glatt Bite, on July 4th. Executive Assistant Ocean County Prosecutor Michel A. Paulhus said Clark broke a window to the KFC restaurant with a tire-iron in the middle of the night and threw two Molotov cocktails inside, while Kindig threw two Molotov cocktails against the wall of the building. Paulhus said the pair made the Molotov cocktails at Clark's house with wine bottles they emptied of wine and filled with gasoline and motor oil. The substances did not ignite, he said. "I would categorize them as poorly constructed Molotov cocktails," Paulhus said. He added that although the devices did not ignite, they created a mess at the restaurant, which was closed at the time of the incident. Clark and Kindig pleaded guilty Feb. 23 to burglary and arson. In admitting the crimes, both said they did not like the way KFC treated chickens.app.

Sick Of The Traffic In Town? That May Change

More traffic signals, fewer left turns and better street lighting are some of the changes the downtown could soon experience as the township looks to relieve traffic congestion and improve pedestrian safety, the APP reports. The township planner recently turned in a report that recommends installing several traffic lights along Clifton, Lexington and Forest avenues as well as at the intersection of North Lake Drive and Lakewood Avenue. It also suggested prohibiting drivers from crossing or making a left turn onto Madison Avenue at intersections with no traffic light. Lakewood's population went from 45,048 in 1990 to 67,910 in 2005, according to the report, citing state figures. Rough estimates put today's population at about 80,000. The increase has taken its toll on the roadway infrastructure and public safety. The planner, T&M Associates, fielded questions and comments at a public hearing Monday, though only about a half-dozen people showed. Some spoke in favor of improving bus services to alleviate traffic. "It would take a lot of cars off the road if we made the buses child- and stroller-friendly," Moshe Gluck, 29, said, noting the high proportion of young children in town. T&M will now draft a final report and submit it probably in late May to the Township Committee for a vote, T&M traffic engineer Lee Klein said. See the app for a full report.

PG May Not Stand Alone After All

The state Senate Judiciary Committee voted Monday to move the nomination of a second member of the Ocean County Board of Taxation to the full Senate. Attorney Nick Montenegro, 66, of Point Pleasant, a Democrat, was among two names from Ocean County released by the committee. Real estate agent P.G. Waxman, 50, of Lakewood, also a Democrat, is up for reappointment. Both nominations are for five-year terms and come with an annual salary of about $20,000. The part-time appointments are made by the governor and require confirmation of the Judiciary Committee before a vote in the full Senate. "That is good news," said county Tax Administrator L. Ozzie Vituscka. "It makes us functional. We can conduct business. It's not optimum, but it's a start." The seven-member county tax board has been functioning with just a single commissioner — Waxman — for more than a month. While Waxman can hear tax appeals as the lone sitting member of the board, he is legally bound from rendering decisions without at least a second member. The panel has been dwindling in size for the past two years due to attrition. Previous appointments made by Gov. Jon S. Corzine either withdrew their names, were held up over questions about qualifications or blocked for political reasons. The board expects to hear about 11,000 tax appeals from property owners in 2009. There are reassessments this year in Bay Head, Manchester and Seaside Park and revaluations in Jackson, Lacey and Toms River, according to the board.App.

Readers' Scoop: Looking For 'Clean' Help

To the editor,

I have a cleaning help in my employ, and something about her gave me this unsettling feeling..She didn’t clean all that great, but she spoke English, she was very reliable and she always showed. I kept telling myself, I'll keep her until after Pesach and then I'll get a new one. One day my husband came into the house singing, and she tells me, "I see your husband is in a good mood". I just ignored her and attributed it to nosiness. But now its after Pesach, and I haven't found someone else and I am desperate for a clean house, so I mentioned to my daughter, who is twelve, maybe we should just take her back. My daughter told me, "you know what she told me,'you have to have a boyfriend already, first you have one, then he'll introduce you to others, I'll help you find one’"!! I am in utter shock, what kind of TRASH do we let into our homes?! Are we sacrificing the kedusha of our homes because of our comfort? On the other hand, it is not possible for me to do it on my own.
I would like to hear some your readers' opinions on the matter,
Thanks,
A Lakewood mother.

Message From The LPD Regarding Boating

Enjoying Lake Carasaljo The Friday after Passover was our first view of the coming spring. Many families were seen enjoying Lake Carasaljo Park. Some were walking amongst nature, some were with their children enjoying the playgrounds, and some were enjoying kayaking and boating on the water. It certainly was a relaxing way to complete the holidays. Many of the boaters appeared new to this recreation and the Lakewood Police Department would like to pass on a few reminders to help them safely enjoy this activity: 1). Only human powered, sail powered, or solely electric powered watercraft are allowed to operate on Lake Carasaljo or Lake Manetta. Kayaks, canoes, rowboats, inflatable approved watercraft, peddle (paddle) boats, sunfish, and sailfish are considered vessels and are regulated under New Jersey Boating Laws. Electric Powered watercraft of any length are considered “power boats” and must display current NJ Registration Numbers. 2). New Jersey State Law requires that all vessels (boats) have enough US Coast Guard Approved and correctly sized “Personal Floatation Devices” (PFD – Life Jacket) for all occupants of the vessel. Any occupant under the age of 12 years must wear the PFD whenever the vessel is underway (moving). We recommend that all persons wear a proper PFD. 3). New Jersey State Law also requires that all vessels are equipped with a Sound Signaling Appliance (generally a marine style whistle). This can aid in alerting someone on the shore that the boater is in distress. 4). During hours of darkness or diminished visibility (fog) a minimum of a “visible” hand held lantern must be used. 5). Also recommended is a “throw rope” bag which can be quickly thrown to a boater in distress to aid in their rescue. Accidents can, and do, occur on the water. The Lakewood Police Department and other Lakewood Emergency Responders are always on the ready to serve in the event of an incident. The above safety items are designed to give us, and the distressed boater, more time to make it safely to shore and then home. We all hope that your use of the Lakewood Township Parks remains a safe and enjoyable experience. Have a great Spring!!
