Property Tax Rebates In The Mail For Some

Property tax rebate checks are in the mail for New Jersey senior citizens and disabled residents enrolled in the Senior Freeze program. Gov. Jon Corzine announced Thursday that 129,000 checks averaging $1,132 started going out this week. The deadline for applications has been extended to Aug. 17. The senior freeze program reimburses the difference between the amount of local property taxes applicants paid when they enrolled in the program and the amount paid in the reimbursement year. Recipients must be disabled or at least 65 years old and earning $70,000 or less annually. The new state budget has eliminated property tax rebates for nonsenior homeowners with incomes over $75,000 and reduced them for those earning between $50,000 and $75,000. AP
