TLS EXCLUSIVE: Chavrei Hakollel Fined Nearly $3,000 By Township

TLS EXCLUSIVE: On Monday morning, in the Lakewood Municipal court, Chavrei Hakollel was fined an exorbitant sum of $2850 for not obtaining a C/O for their charity thrift store in a timely fashion. The store was opened about a year ago to raise money for the Kollel and to help employ teenagers who are looking for work. R' Yishai Ghoori tells The Lakewood Scoop that the township inspector Derryl Nelson approached the Kollel before Pesach and told them that the current C/O doesn't cover the store and that a change of use would be needed. Immediately, the Kollel paid around $1,000 and obtained the change. It was then that R' Chaim Abbadi Shlita arranged for an inspection and all went well. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to the architect and many other people, (Read more)

I would like to hear the Townships side of the story before I pass judgement. I implore TLS to carefully edit all comments made on this story.

Why does a store need a shower?

Lakewooder is right! He realizes that many times when such a story is reported there is another side to it. Additionally there is a hatred shown towards township employees, which puts the anti semitic comments made on app.com to shame.

THIS IS WHY PEOPLE TRY NOT TOO DEAL WITH INSPECTORS.THEY HARASS US AND ARE CORRUPT.MORE PEOPLE SHOULD SPEAK UP.THEY THINK THEY OWN THE TOWN.I KNOW FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE THAT THIS IS TRUE.WE DO ANYTHING TO SATISFY THEM AND THEY STILL HARASS.THINK OF IT,IT DOES'T COST MUCH FOR LANDLORDS TO DO IT THE RIGHT WAY.THESE INSPECTORS THINK IT'S A GAME.

WE NEED CHANGE

Part of the problem here is that many mosdos and connected individuals abuse their connections and flout the laws that apply to other people. This has several remifications. 1) Many enforcement people (& others) resent this and are overly eager to find violations at less connected institutions out of reserntment. 2) It's difficult for judges and bystanders alike to know whether any given instance is an institution being harrassed or the institution being stymied in their attempts to disregard the law.

Perhaps it's time to either outsource the department, or turn it over to the state. That would eliminate any appearance of impropriety on either side...keep everyone honest. State or private workers would have nothing to gain by playing hardball or by playing favorites. More than likely they will just punch in, do their job according to code, and punch out.

It is always the good people that get in trouble. Let us show our support for the kollel in a time when they need it. They opened this business to give jobs to the boys and to cover expenses in these times. They do the dirty work that nobody else wants to do. Kol Hakavod.

Yes, where's Williamson when we need him. At least we know he can be bribed and work in our favor. Let's get him out of jail!! Couldn't Nelson be bribed. Have you tried that?

This is all because the askanim in town have been demonized and belittled here on the scoop for so long. Township employees read these sites and comments, and have been slowly coming to the realization that the askanim no longer have the full control over the comunnity. In the past when an askan said all would be well, it was. Only recently have they lost their clout. While the newly formed LAC is partly to blame, it is more the town as a whole. People have to realize that the askanim have to have absolute authority. There can be no such thing as saying the vaad is corrupt or they are in it for their own interest. We all have to have utter reverence for our vaad members. Only then will we regain our koach to help out individuals and mosdos when they need it. Remember, no matter what you think is right or wrong, if the vaad says it, you MUST agree and follow. No questions asked. Otherwise we cannot help when these type of situations present themselves.

Dearl nelson should have been removed years ago!! He has shown himself to be a stickler for every detail when it comes to any jewish owned property. Even when the owner is in the process of improving a previous blight he will harass them during the process I am always loathe to scream anti semite wgen a tax asessor or cop doesn't do something in the favor of a jew but sriously folks this guy acts and looks like farakhan wannabe.if any can tell me one case where he was fair or in the slightest bit understanding I would be amazed . We have a downtown filled with store after store that doesn't really sell anything to anyone. They are obvious fronts for illegal activity.our police know it our inspectors know it and some of our mayors know it. And nothing is being done about it.many of them sell illegal products. Untaxed cigarettes, they actually slaughter pigs in the backrooms, sell illegally imported products sell food on the street in unsanitary conditions etc. Rabbi ghoori has been fighting for the good of this town for years. I hope tls tells us when the case will come before a judge so we can show up in the thousands to show our support. And if we could all find it in our wallets to give this very worthy moisad our support. They would not need to make a thrift store in the first place.
