Important Notice For Those Who Have Filed Tax Appeals

NOTICE: The Lakewood Scoop has learned that originally Lakewood appeals were scheduled for the nine days. Tax Board President, Pinchus Gershon (PG) Waxman requested that they be deferred until after Tisha B’Av. He also requested that the hearings be completed prior to Erev Yom Kippur and not go into the days before Yom Tov or Chol Hamoed. There are four appeal days for Lakewood in August, August 4, 6, 13, and 17. The balance of hearings will be held in September, with the exception of commercial and tax-exempt cases. If a taxpayer will be away for their scheduled hearing date, it can be rescheduled by calling the Ocean County Board of Taxation office. Notices for the August hearing dates were already mailed. September notices should go out by mid-August. Regardless of the hearing date, any refund from the Township (for those that win their appeals) will be retroactive to January 1, 2009. (TLS)

Taxpayers who are scheduled for a tax hearing must give to both the lakewood assesor and to the OC tax board a list of 3-5 comparable sales at least seven days prior to the hearing date.

The board likes to see exterior pictures of the home that is under appeal, and of the comparable homes as well. The pictures can be brought to the hearing and need not be submitted in advance with the list of comparable sales.

If there is an appraisal report, the appraisal must attend the hearing in person. An LLC or corporation needs a NJ attorney to represent them.

REPLY if u signed a settlement agreement with the township there is no need to do anything further. Just keep a copy for your records.

If you signed a settlement with the assessor's office, a judgment will be issued by the county after ALL the appeal hearing dates. The tax collector will adjust your taxes when the judgments come out. It may not be until late in the year

The tax board did not want to accomodate my request to postpone my hearing date. I do not think it was right to schedule them during bain hazmanim

I also got notice for bain hazmanim when i had already paid for an out of town rental . I didnt even bother to try for a postponement because I knew they wouldnt give it .

WEhy does the article say theuy will postpone it? I am aware that Monmouth county postpones it w/o any problem. It should be decent courtesy to taxpayer to allow at least one postponement.

PG - I am sure you read the scoop maybe you can speak to the scheduler that Lakewood should be treated like every other town and allow for 1 postponement.
