Got Some Extra Cash From Your Tax Refund?

Even before the economic slowdown took hold, New Jersey's food banks were already trying to help hundreds of thousands of needy residents. And things have only grown worse in recent months, as many more are coming through their doors, but there's a lot less on the shelves. But help could soon be on the way. Legislation that establishes a "Community Food Pantry Fund" in the state Treasury Department -and allows taxpayers to donate a portion of their income tax refund to it -is being considered by Gov. Jon Corzine. The bill passed the Assembly in October 2008, and the Senate gave its approval last month. If it becomes law, money donated to the fund would be distributed to pantries through the state's food purchase program. And all money raised would be used to buy food. AP
