Vehicle inspection centers are not affected by the furloughs because they are privately operated. The unpaid day off is designed to help cut costs and balance the state budget in the recession. MVC employees are planning to protest outside offices in Newark. Their union said the furloughs don't save money because the Motor Vehicles Commission is self-funded through fees.
