Enjoying Lake Carasaljo The Friday after Passover was our first view of the coming spring. Many families were seen enjoying Lake Carasaljo Park. Some were walking amongst nature, some were with their children enjoying the playgrounds, and some were enjoying kayaking and boating on the water. It certainly was a relaxing way to complete the holidays. Many of the boaters appeared new to this recreation and the Lakewood Police Department would like to pass on a few reminders to help them safely enjoy this activity: 1). Only human powered, sail powered, or solely electric powered watercraft are allowed to operate on Lake Carasaljo or Lake Manetta. Kayaks, canoes, rowboats, inflatable approved watercraft, peddle (paddle) boats, sunfish, and sailfish are considered vessels and are regulated under New Jersey Boating Laws. Electric Powered watercraft of any length are considered “power boats” and must display current NJ Registration Numbers. 2). New Jersey State Law requires that all vessels (boats) have enough US Coast Guard Approved and correctly sized “Personal Floatation Devices” (PFD – Life Jacket) for all occupants of the vessel. Any occupant under the age of 12 years must wear the PFD whenever the vessel is underway (moving). We recommend that all persons wear a proper PFD. 3). New Jersey State Law also requires that all vessels are equipped with a Sound Signaling Appliance (generally a marine style whistle). This can aid in alerting someone on the shore that the boater is in distress. 4). During hours of darkness or diminished visibility (fog) a minimum of a “visible” hand held lantern must be used. 5). Also recommended is a “throw rope” bag which can be quickly thrown to a boater in distress to aid in their rescue. Accidents can, and do, occur on the water. The Lakewood Police Department and other Lakewood Emergency Responders are always on the ready to serve in the event of an incident. The above safety items are designed to give us, and the distressed boater, more time to make it safely to shore and then home. We all hope that your use of the Lakewood Township Parks remains a safe and enjoyable experience. Have a great Spring!!
