The school district is no longer "in need of improvement," according to the state, after making progress two years in a row. A June 15 letter to Interim Superintendent Eugenia Lawson from the state's Department of Education stated that, based on the final 2008 Adequate Yearly progress results, the public schools no longer fell into a "district in need of improvement," as defined by the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. "We commend you, your staff, students and stakeholders for the hard work you have done to improve the academic achievement of your students," said the letter by Suzanne Ochse, director of the DOE's Office of Student Achievement and Accountability. The district was on the state's watch list since 2004. "It shows just how hard the teachers and administrators have been working throughout district to accomplish this task," Assistant Superintendent William Andersen said, noting that the administration no longer has to notify parents that their schools were performing below standard. Andersen acknowledged, however, this was a first step. The challenge now, he said, was to "stay on task and stay off the list." (APP)
